We are pleased to announce the solo exhibition “about a portrait” by contemporary artist Keisuke Masuda at tagboat gallery.
Keisuke Masuda, recipient of the Tomio Koyama Award at the 8th TAGBOAT AWARD, has gained popularity for his simple and pure portraits enveloped in a unique soft ambiance.
The women depicted in his artworks are not real individuals but fictional figures created by covering handmade torsos with clothes and accessories personally purchased by the artist, combining facial features. Employing a technique known as “mon-chu-mon,” where similar motifs nest within a specific motif, Masuda elaborates on the angles and composition of each portrait.
These non-existent portraits are carefully and meticulously painted in the style of traditional Western portraiture and serve as prototypes that explore new ways of positioning portraits in today’s technologically advanced era of photography.
In his first solo exhibition at tagboat, Keisuke Masuda will exhibit and sell mainly oil paintings and pencil drawings. We invite you to witness these artworks that establish a two-dimensional realm departing from realism.
