We are pleased to present the solo exhibition “I’ve been painting” by contemporary artist Kazuki Umigishi at tagboat Gallery. Celebrating ten years since graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Painting, Oil Painting Course, Kazuki Umigishi restarted his artistic activities triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He emphasizes the fundamental act of “drawing and erasing lines” using digital tools and acrylic paints.
In his work, the artist layers digital drawings and then creates multiple analog layers using masking tape. This exhibition, his first solo show, will feature approximately 15 new pieces from two series that form the foundation of his style: “This is a painting” and “Overlap,” themed around layering.
The vivid colors of the canvases not only represent the layers’ accumulation but also the overlap of various periods, cultures, styles, and environments that the artist has integrated over time.
The translucent tones create shadows and depth, evoking a sense of accumulated time and flow that transcends individual existence.
We invite you to explore the new tangible and intangible dimensions revealed through the layers in this exhibition.
