We are pleased to present a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Takahiro Oyama, titled “Exploring the Uniqueness of Japan’s Diversity.”
Takahiro Oyama, a graduate of the Sculpture Program in the Arts and Culture Department at Tohoku University of Art and Design, creates wooden sculptures primarily inspired by “Drag Queens,” who are male performers dressed as women.
With flamboyant makeup, costumes, and high heels, Drag Queens exaggerate femininity in their performances. Oyama not only portrays their striking appearance and character but also reevaluates culture and history from an artistic perspective, preserving them as sculptures.
In his first solo exhibition at tagboat, Oyama will showcase approximately 13 pieces, including wood carvings up to 3 meters in height and prints. His work challenges societal preconceptions about “gender” to create opportunities for reevaluation and encourages us all to live true to ourselves.
Please join us in exploring the world that emerges from the resilience of “human beauty” in adversity.
